No fewer than 80 youths have been arrested in Ughelli for violating the social distancing order of the Delta state government.
The youths were rounded up in a popular event centre, Adam Event Centre, at Ihwrekpokpor community in Ughelli north local government area of Delta state following a tip off by residents.
Speaking to newsmen, the council chairman, Hon. Godwin Adode blamed the management of the event centre for accommodating population more than two hundred persons into the Event Centre despite enough campaign and sensitisation by the state government and Ughelli North council.
Adode disclosed that he has had a meeting with all owners of hotels and event centres in the council area to adhere strictly to the state government ban on all cinema houses, club houses and event centres to remain closed till further notice.
According to him, the ban was to curtail the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the state, adding that the action of the management of Adams Event Centre contravened the order of federal government of Nigeria and directives of the Delta state government.
Some of the violators who spoke to newsmen at Police ‘A’ Division, Ughelli said they were at the Event Centre to celebrate with their friends.
A student of Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State simply identified as Godswill informed journalists that the Event Centre filled to its brim, adding that over 300 persons were in attendance as at the time he was arrested and taken police ‘A’ Division, Ughelli.
While pleading for pardon, the Niger Delta University student promised not to flout the directives of the state government anymore.
Meanwhile, the Director and Manager of the Adams Event Centre has directed to report himself in Ughelli Area Command to explain why he flouted the directives of state government and why he should not be taken to court.
