There was a wide spread outrage in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital following the abduction of a Popular NaijaLivetv.com online news medium owner, Comrade Mienpamo Onitsha Saint, by some masked men from his home off INEC Road in Kpansia area of the state.
According to his relatives, his mobile phones were seized and he was worn a similar mask and whisked away in hand cuffs along the mobile phones of his relatives at the house during the abduction.
According to one of the relatives, who pleaded anonymity, the armed men numbering five came into the compound with a ladder and entered into his residence through the back door which was opened because Mienpamo Onitsha Saint was busy working on his laptop.
While some of his friends and close associates attributed the abduction to the recent fierce reportage of the demise of the 42 years old billionaire, Pastor Kenebi Okoko, few weeks ago, others told newsmen that the arrest has been allegedly traced to the state government house.
Sources say the abduction was allegedly carried out due to the recent reports on the suit filed but monitored by his medium, NaijaLiveTV, by the governorship candidate of the Liberation Movement, Vijah Opuama against the state deputy governor, Senator Lawrence Ewrhujakpor at the governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja.
A legal practitioner and a civil rights activist in the state, Barrister Ebikebuna Augustine Aluzu, accused the Bayelsa state government of being the brain behind the abduction of Mienpamo Onitsha Saint a journalist and founder of NaijaLive TV.
According to him,”Mr. Saint was abducted in a commando-style during the wee hours of Saturday, 8 May 2020 at about 2:00am from his house along Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Road in Yenagoa, the state capital by masked men who were armed to the teeth. The abductors made away with his mobile phones and other gadgets in his house.
“We are aware that the government of Bayelsa state is involved in this shameful act as characters in this government are notorious for their nefarious activities during the last administration. Findings from reliable source indicate that Mr. Saint is being held in the government house, Bayelsa State”.
“We believe that the abduction of Mr. Saint is not unconnected to his parallel position with the prosperity government of Douye Diri on issues bothering on public importance in the state, noting that his abduction came barely hours after he published that the deputy governor of Bayelsa state has been served with a subpoena to appear before the Bayelsa state governorship election petition tribunal holden at Abuja to submit his original certificate.
“As a journalist, Mr. Saint has done no wrong. Mr. Saint has no criminal record. We demand for the unconditional release of Mr. Saint or that he be charged to a court of competent jurisdiction within the next 24 hours. We will be glad to meet with the government in court should the need arise. If for any reason, the government of Bayelsa state feels threatened or slighted by the reports of NaijaLive TV, it should simply confront Mr. Saint in an open court rather than this cowardly abduction it executed”.
“While we cannot compel the state government on how it should expend the state resources on fruitful ventures that will add meaning to the state, it is our duty to direct and hold the government accountable for their actions.
“If the government of Sen. Douye Diri feels the state resources should be used with executive might to clamp down on innocent citizens, then, it should build a bigger prison in the state to accommodate the many Renaissance Bayelsa youths. Respect for constituted authority is not coerced, it is inspired.”
